The publishing house «European House» published the memoirs of Aron Perelman the last owner of the famous publishing house “Brokgauz Efron”, one of the establishers of the magazine Jewish World and Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society. The text was prepared by Evgeny Gollerbah, who made his research within the framework of the Grant programme of 2005 of the International Center for Russian & East European Jewish Studies.

Methodological Seminar

Interdisciplinary Methodological Seminar in the Jewish Cultural Center

The Methodological Seminar for University Instructors in Jewish Studies, organized by the International Center for Russian and East European Jewish Studies, convened in the course of 2005 at the Moscow Jewish Cultural Center at B. Nikitskaya Street, and was aimed at assembling the members of the academic community for regular discussions of a wide range oа theoretical and methodological issues and topics in history and culture of the East European Jewry. The seminar also welcomed all those interested in Jewish history and culture. The seminar featured as speakers the leading specialists in different branches of humanities (history, sociology, philosophy, culture studies and philology).

  • On March 1, 2005 Arkady Kovelman, Doctor of History, Professor of the Institute for Asian and African Countries (at Moscow State University) delivered a lecture on Academic Jewish Studies Between Hegel and Postmodernism
  • On May 30, 2005 the meeting was devoted to discussion of K.A. Svasyan’s article Discourse, Terror, and the Jewry, published in Voprosy Filosofii (Issues of Philosophy) Journal (No. 2 for 2005)
  • On October 17, 2005 the third meeting took place. At the session, Oleg Budnitskii delivered a lecture What Is a “Reason for Pogrom?” The ensuing discussion concerned major problems in understanding the phenomena of the Jewish pogroms during the Civil War in Russia.
