The publishing house «European House» published the memoirs of Aron Perelman the last owner of the famous publishing house “Brokgauz Efron”, one of the establishers of the magazine Jewish World and Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Society. The text was prepared by Evgeny Gollerbah, who made his research within the framework of the Grant programme of 2005 of the International Center for Russian & East European Jewish Studies.

The presentation of the book  “…Someone from the former Petersburg”. S.L. Tsinberg“- a historian of the Jewish literature, a critic and a publicist

Lecturer: Galina Arkadievna Eliasberg

Tsinberg is a historian of the Jewish literature, a critic and a publicist. Galina Arkadievna Eliasberg is the author of the book.
G.A. Eliasberg told about her work at the presentation, she answered the questions that were asked by some presenters. S. L. Tsinberg’s grandson talked at the presentation as well.
That is the first book in the history of Russian and foreign Judaica that examines the complete heritage of a distinguished Israeli scientist (Sergey) Lazarevich Tsinberg (1873 -1939) whose creative work is of considerable importance in the history of Jewish culture in the early XX century.
The description of S.L. Tsinberg’s life and creative work (as a publicist, literature critic, and a chemist – metallurgist) is compiled according to the archive materials and the scientist’s epistolary heritage, according to the recollections of his contemporaries as well as publications devoted to the Russian –Jewish history in the XIX-XX centuries.

“Dziga and his brothers”

The presentation of E.V. Tsimbal’s film “Dziga and his brothers” was held in the Center for Oriental Literature of the Russian State Library.
This is a film about three Kaufman brothers, perhaps the greatest brothers in the history of cinema.

  • David Kaufman (his pseudonym is Dziga Vertov is the author of such films as “The Eleventh”, “Stride, Soviet!”, “Man with a Movie Camera” (this film has been one of the ten best movies in history for the last 50 years) and other. He became one of the creators of the movie language.
  • Moisey Kaufman was Dziga’s cameraman and he shot almost all the films that were made prior to 1929, including “Man with a Movie Camera”. He became a director, Vertov’s’s rival and competitor after the conflict with Dziga.
  • Boris Kaufman, a cameraman. He shot three classical French films “On the subject of Nice”, “Zero for Conduct”, “Atlanta” and about ten classical American films. He won Oscar Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

The author of the film is Evgeny Vasilievich Tsimbal – a cinema director, a historian, an awardee of the “Nika” National Cinema Award, a winner of the British Academy Television Award.

Jewish Diplomacy in the period of wars and revolutions

Lecturer: Oleg Budnitskiy, Professor of History, and the Academic Director of the International Center for Russian & East European Jewish Studies

The lecture focused on attempts made by leaders of Jewish European and American organizations to defend their coreligionists’ rights in Eastern Europe in the period of Russian, Habsburg and Ottoman Empires breakdowns, revolutions, in the period when boundaries were redefined and new states appeared. The other focus of the lecture was the struggle Russian Jewish leaders led against anti-Semitic propaganda in Europe and against identification of bolshevism and Judaism. He told about the activity that had been led by M.M. Vinaver, L. Marshal, G.Schiff and others.

Anti-Semitism and pogroms in the Northern Caucasus in the context of Caucasian phobias (1920-ies)

Lecturer: Ludmila Sultanovna Gatagova, PhD in history, the senior fellow, the Center for population and ethnic relationship in Russia studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, the author of works on the history of Northern Caucuses and ethnic relations in the Russian empire in the XIXth- early XX centuries.

This small research was prepared on the basis of materials borrowed from a recently completed research on ethnic relations in the Northern Caucasus and documents obtained from the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History funds.

The lecture touched upon stories reflecting the peripeteia of social and political life the Jewish population of the Northern Caucasus, which has always been inconsiderable in number, led in the first years of revolution. The work was devoted to Caucasian Jews who were destined to find themselves in the center of extremely dramatic events that overflowed the territory of one of the least calm areas of the former empire. “Traditional” Caucasus phobias that in fact replaced anti-Semitism in this region were analyzed.

“Early Zhabotinsky’s biography (1880-1905)”

Lecturer: Evgenija Ivanova.

The 28th lecture of the series of public presentations launched by the International Center for Russian and East European Jewish Studies was presented in the Center for Oriental Literature of the Russian State Library. The topic of the lecture was “Early Zhabotinsky’s biography (1880-1905)”.

The laundered novel of the “Doctor Zhivago” first edition Mystery

Lecturer: Ivan Tolsloj, the journalist of the Radio Liberty in Prague.

The 29th lecture of the series of public presentations launched by the International Center for Russian and East European Jewish Studies and M.I. Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature was presented in the Big Hall of the State Library for Foreign Literature. The topic of the lecture was “The laundered novel of the “Doctor Zhivago” first edition Mystery”.
